Two Knowers in One Body: Decoding the "Kshetrajna" | Gita 13.1–2
In the beginning of Chapter 13, Arjuna asks a technical question about the relationship between the physical body and the consciousness within it. The answer provided by the speaker (Kaal) reveals that the body is a "Field" inhabited by two distinct observers.
I. The Field (Kshetra) and the Local Knower
The Verse (13.1):
"This body, O Kaunteya, is called the Field (Kshetra), and he who knows it is called the Knower of the Field (Kshetrajna) by the sages."
The Breakdown:
- The Field (Kshetra): Your physical body is like a plot of land. Whatever "seeds" of Karma you sow in this body, you must "reap" the harvest in the form of pleasure or pain.
- The First Knower (The Soul/Jivatma): This is you. You are the local tenant of the body. You know your own pains, your own desires, and your own history. However, your knowledge is limited to your own "field."
II. The Second Knower: The Universal Monitor
The Verse (13.2):
"Know Me also to be the Knower of the Field (Kshetrajna) in all fields, O Bharata..."
The Revelation:
This is the "Smoking Gun" of Chapter 13. The speaker (Kaal) admits that he is also a "Knower" inside your body.
- The Hidden Watcher: While the Soul (Jivatma) knows only its own body, Kaal is present in every body (from an ant to a king) as the "Universal Knower."
- The Function: He acts as a "Secret Monitor" or a "CCTV Camera." He records every thought and action of the soul to ensure that the Law of Karma is perfectly applied.
III. Why This Matters: The "Two Birds" Concept
This aligns with the Vedic concept of two birds sitting on the same tree (the body).
- The Soul: Eats the fruit of the tree (experiences the results of Karma).
- The Second Knower (Kaal): Merely watches and records the "bill" for those fruits.
The Tattvadarshi Insight: Many people mistake this "Second Knower" for the Supreme God. However, in Gita 13.22, a Third entity is introduced: the Paramatma (Supreme Soul).
- Kaal is the Knower who judges and consumes.
- Supreme God Kabir is the Witness who sustains and liberates.
IV. The "Knowledge" that Liberates
The speaker concludes Verse 13.2 by saying:
"...Knowledge of the Field and the Knower of the Field is what I consider to be true Knowledge."
True knowledge is not just knowing you have a soul. It is knowing:
- The Field: That this body is a temporary, perishable "office."
- The Soul: That you are a tenant trapped by your own actions.
- The Monitor (Kaal): That your every thought is being recorded by the master of the 21 universes.
- The Way Out: That there is a Supreme God (13.22) who is different from both the body and the "Consumer" (Kaal).
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
1. Is the "Me" in 13.2 the Supreme God?
No. The "Me" is the speaker (Kaal). He is the master of the "Field" (the material world). He knows all fields because they are his property. The Supreme God is mentioned later as the Upadrashta (The superior Witness).
2. If Kaal is in my body, does he control my actions?
He provides the "energy" and "permissions" based on your past Karma, but the soul chooses the "seeds" it sows. Kaal simply ensures you receive the exact harvest (result) you deserve.
3. How can I stop being "monitored" by Kaal?
By realizing you are not part of his "Field." Through the Tattvadarshi's "Eye of Knowledge" (13.34), the soul learns to disconnect from the Field and the Three Gunas, eventually moving into the jurisdiction of the Supreme God.
